What you will learn

Weekly course plan
Week 1 — Getting started with European Portuguese
In the first lesson, you will learn the basics of European Portuguese pronunciation and how the language sounds. We will practise greetings, introductions and simple classroom phrases.
You will learn how to:
- Say hello and goodbye
- Introduce yourself
- Say your name and where you are from
- Use basic polite phrases
- Understand the sounds of European Portuguese
- Feel more comfortable hearing and repeating Portuguese
This week is all about building confidence and getting used to the language.
Week 2 — Talking about yourself
In week 2, you will learn how to give simple information about yourself and ask other people basic questions.
You will learn how to:
- Say your nationality
- Say where you live
- Ask someone their name
- Ask where someone is from
- Build short beginner sentences
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to have a very simple introduction conversation in Portuguese.
Week 3 — Numbers, spelling and contact details
In week 3, we will focus on numbers, the alphabet and useful information for everyday situations.
You will learn how to:
- Count in Portuguese
- Spell your name
- Give your phone number
- Ask for someone’s contact details
- Understand basic personal information
- Practise listening to numbers and letters
This is especially useful for travel, bookings, forms and everyday communication.
Week 4 — Everyday objects and useful phrases
In week 4, you will learn vocabulary for common objects and useful phrases you can use in daily life.
You will learn how to:
- Talk about things around you
- Use masculine and feminine words
- Use um, uma, o and a
- Ask “What is this?”
- Say you don’t understand
- Ask someone to repeat something
This week helps you start understanding how Portuguese sentences are built.
Week 5 — Food, drinks and cafés
In week 5, we will focus on one of the most useful topics: ordering food and drinks.
You will learn how to:
- Order a coffee, drink or snack
- Ask for the bill
- Use polite restaurant and café phrases
- Understand basic menu vocabulary
- Say what you would like
- Practise a simple café role play
This lesson is very practical if you are planning to visit Portugal.
Week 6 — Daily routine and common verbs
In week 6, you will learn how to talk about your daily routine using common Portuguese verbs.
You will learn how to:
- Talk about simple daily activities
- Use regular verbs in the present tense
- Say what you do during the day
- Talk about work, study and free time
- Ask someone about their routine
- Build longer beginner sentences
This week helps you move from memorising phrases to creating your own sentences.
Week 7 — Days, times and making plans
In week 7, you will learn how to talk about days, times and simple plans.

- Talk about your weekly routine
This lesson will help you understand dates, times and simple arrangements in Portuguese.
Half-term break — 31 October
There is no class on 31 October.
This gives you time to revise, practise and catch up before the final three lessons.
Week 8 — Places, directions and getting around
In week 8, you will learn useful Portuguese for places and directions.
You will learn how to:
- Ask where something is
- Understand simple directions
- Talk about places in a town or city
- Use phrases for getting around
- Ask for help politely
- Practise travel-related conversations
This is a very useful lesson if you want to use Portuguese while travelling in Portugal.
Week 9 — Shopping and everyday situations
In week 9, we will focus on shopping and simple everyday interactions.
You will learn how to:
- Ask how much something costs
- Say what you want to buy
- Use numbers and prices
- Ask simple questions in shops
- Understand common shopping phrases
- Practise a shop role play
This week helps you use Portuguese in real-life situations with more confidence.
Week 10 — Review and final speaking practice
In the final week, we will review everything you have learned and practise using Portuguese in simple conversations.
You will revise:
